In a city or wilderness, a scale of hours is often more appropriate. It takes them about a minute to creep down a long hallway, another minute to check for traps on the door at the end of the hall, and a good ten minutes to search the chamber beyond for anything interesting or valuable. In a dungeon environment, the adventurers' movement happens on a scale of minutes. The DM might use a different time scale depending on the context of the situation at hand. In situations where keeping track of the passage of time is important, the DM determines the time a task requires. Sometimes, the passage of time and the adventurers’ actions determine what happens, so the DM might use a timeline or a flowchart to track their progress instead of a map. The DM’s notes, including a key to the map, describe what the adventurers find as they enter each new area. Typically, the DM uses a map as an outline of the adventure, tracking the characters’ progress as they explore dungeon corridors or wilderness regions. The DM narrates the results of their actions.The players describe what they want to do.Whether adventurers are exploring a dusty dungeon or the complex relationships of a royal court, the game follows a natural rhythm, as outlined in the book’s introduction: The rules for resting are also in this section, along with a discussion of the activities your character might pursue between adventures. This section covers the basics of the adventuring life, from the mechanics of movement to the complexities of social interaction. And if all goes well, your character will survive to claim rich rewards before embarking on a new adventure. Your character in the game might explore forgotten ruins and uncharted lands, uncover dark secrets and sinister plots, and slay foul monsters. I do think I may have missed a thing or two.Delving into the ancient Tomb of Horrors, slipping through the back alleys of Waterdeep, hacking a fresh trail through the thick jungles on the Isle of Dread-these are the things that Dungeons & Dragons adventures are made of. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ll order myself another 32GB memory card and start my adventure anew. And if you’re on the sensitive side about cartoon girls and how they are depicted in video games, this is definitely not the game for you. If you like JRPGs with fan-service, this is a no-brainer. If you like first-person dungeon crawlers, this is a solid choice. There really isn’t that much more to say about DT2. The music could be better, and the environments look a bit drab, but the fight scenes look great, and the game is very… very… very long. And let me tell you, the voice acting in this game is absolutely brilliant. I don’t mind dual languages, but 99% of the time (1% being Persona 4: Golden), I prefer the original Japanese audio over English dubs. The battle system is fantastic, the girls’ classes are diverse, and the art is absolutely stunning.Īnother highlight of this game, for me, is the fact that it does not have an English dub imposed. It is worth pointing out, though, that if you’re indifferent to the girls, underneath the lusty exterior lies a heart of gameplay gold.

For this, you use spells and recruit girls along the way.įor the most part, DT2 is your standard JRPG fare, but with a lot of skin being shown. Basically, you’re in charge of ridding the kingdom of Romulea (no relation to that Star Trek race of similar name, as far as I know) of monsters. The story is… convoluted, to say the least. I don’t mind cartoon girls doing daft things. So let’s get that out of the way: I like fan service.

This prompted me to play most of the game on a friend’s system. The incidents are unrelated, but it does mean that my review is a few months late.ĭungeon Travelers 2 is a first-person dungeon crawler game, much like the Etrian Odyssey series (or Persona Q, if prefer). Before I proceed with my review, and in the interest of full disclosure, I want to clarify that I had issues playing this game due to a corrupt memory card.
